Event: Digital Sessions Women Edition Flat 101, 2020.
Opening talk of the event in which we present some relevant data on the reality of the situation of women in Spanish companies and in particular, in the digital sector.
Let’s see some global data:
- A woman earns 21% less than her partner (man) for jobs of equal value.
- Women occupy 34% of positions of responsibility in companies with between 50 and 500 employees.
- Female employment rate stands at 44.7% compared to 56.2% for men.
- 74.1% of women hold part-time positions, compared to 25.8% of men.
In addition, if we delve into the sector in which we find ourselves, in the European Union, only 21.5% of those who work in the digital sector are women.
UNESCO and the EQUALS coalition have shown that the absence of women in artificial intelligence is causing significant gender biases and the reproduction of roles and stereotypes. In fact, for example, Siri, Alexa, Cortana and Google, are artificial intelligences with personal assistant functions, all of them with names and female voices that are given orders. It should be mentioned that after multiple complaints, Apple went so far as to change Siri’s response to verbal abuse from “I’d blush if I could” to “Excuse me?”
It is for all this that we must continue working on the equality of women in society and in the workplace.
“For a world in which we are socially equal, humanly different and totally free”
